Adventure travel filled with spiritual experience

CHIMAYO PILGRIMAGE

A pilgrimage is a journey where one seeks spiritual discovery along the way to a site with some sort of historical and religious significance.” – Alex Johannigman

Located in Northern New Mexico, the Santuario de Chimayó becomes an important pilgrimage site each year, during the Holy Week, with thousands of pilgrims making the trek to the small adobe church set in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Santa Fe Mountain Adventures has, in past years, hosted individuals and groups who sought to walk from Santa Fe to Chimayó (or from Nambe to Chimayó.  In 2020 and 2021, the treks were canceled due to the pandemic.  In 2022, pilgrims were once again welcome to make the walk to the Santuario.  We opted not to offer any group excursions.

We are, however, planning for 2024 and will be offering guided multi-day treks from Santa Fe to Chimayó.  We will start from the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and hike on single track trails towards Chimayó.  Our goal is to hike 6 to 8 hours a day.  We will either arrange for you to camp in the mountains or shuttle you to your Santa Fe hotel.

The multi-day journey will be offered during Holy Week 2023, but we are happy to discuss arranging private guided pilgrimages in September and October.

Duration:
6 to 8 hours per day / multi-day trek
